Talisman Prologue

Back in September 2012, I was pleased to be able to announce that Talisman: The Magical Quest Game would FINALLY be making it to a video game format after many years in the wilderness in the form of Talisman Prologue!

From the press release - "Nomad Games will adapt Talisman to suit platforms ranging from PC to smartphones and other digitally connected devices, using the Marmalade cross-platform SDK. The first release in the series - Talisman Prologue - is scheduled before the end of 2012 on PC, to be followed by versions for smart phones and tablets."

Then in February 2013 came news that Talisman Prologue would shortly be making its way to Android and iOS tablets under the name of Talisman Prologue HD, but that wasn't quite the full story as it actually made it onto a multitude of Android and iOS platforms as well as BlackBerry and Kindle Fire!

I've been lucky enough to play through Talisman Prologue on PC and Talisman Prologue HD on an Android tablet and I thought I would take the time to give you an overview of both versions.

Tap to Start

Spark up either version and you will be greeted by a clever reworking of Ralph Horsley's epic artwork featured on the box of the physical board game. The lone adventurer facing off against the dragon represents the single player aspects of Talisman Prologue.

There are 10 playable characters in the game, each with (initially) 5 quests to complete that are unlocked as you progress. For the purposes of this game, it was decided that the 4 remaining characters relied too heavily on character interaction, but they will no doubt be making their way to the multiplayer iteration of the game in the future.

Clicking on the character image in the corner of the screen brings up the character card along with details of the quest that you are on. There are even handy tips to help you complete it should you need them.

Battle

Each quest takes you around the land of Talisman and sets you tasks based around the many cards and spaces of the game. Increasing your attributes gives you more chance of survival against some of the game's more powerful foes.

Fate
Talisman Prologue Clairvoyant

The use of fate in the game can be a matter of life and death so it pays to have this follower, that is exclusive to Talisman Prologue, on your side! The Clairvoyant gives you a permanent fate point, so try not to lose her by being cursed by the Hag!

Games Day

You will even meet some new folk around the board. The guys have added in cards to represent such board personalities as the Farmer from the Tavern and the Brigand from the Forest!

Finish your quest and you will be marked out of 3 Talismans, depending on how quickly and efficiently you completed the task at hand. If you simply MUST have 3 Talismans, you can easily play through the quest again!

Talisman Prologue Bonus Character

Players of the PC version of the game have recently had the benefit of a patch which not only fixed a few bits and pieces, but also added 6 new characters to the game! These are an interesting mix from different expansions and it has been suggested that these will be coming to Talisman Prologue HD before too long!

Now, I had been waiting for many years to have Talisman brought to a PC platform, and the chaps at Nomad Games have gone one better by making it available through Thumbstar Games on portable platforms.

Being able to spark up a tablet (or even phone!) and have a quick game is fantastic. I really like the idea of being able to quickly boot it up and play a few games of Talisman at a time and being able to go back to it. The assets used are the same as in the physical game and it really is just like having a copy of the game in your pocket!

I think for the meagre outlay of three quid you won't be disappointed with what Talisman Prologue HD offers. It gives a great introduction to the game and the quests allow you to discover the different strategies needed for each character and how they can survive the challenges thrown at them by the land of Talisman.

So, if you want to pick up a copy then you can get it for Android platforms from Google Play, for iOS from iTunes and for BlackBerry from BlackBerry World.

You should also have a look over at the page for Talisman: Digital Edition over on Steam Greenlight and vote for it which will help the chaps from Nomad Games get the game to an even larger audience!
